Day 2 (May 17th): Tiananman Square and the Forbidden City

On the second day, we went to the forbidden city, Tiananmen Square, Beijing duck restaurant and night street. First thing in second day, we visited the Tiananmen Square.  It was a really big square where I could not even see the end of it.  According to Michael, the square could have filled 3.3 million people if they were in order.  Also, Mao Zedong’s tomb was in Tiananmen Square.  We wanted to visit Mao Zedong’s tomb but there were too many Chinese people waiting in line.  Therefore we proceeded to Forbidden city, which was just a street away from Tiananmen Square.

On the way to the Forbidden City, we saw Mao Zedong’s big picture on the wall of the Forbidden city.  It showed us how powerful Mao Zedong has been when he was in power.  When first came into contact, the Forbidden City look tremendous.  The wall of the Forbidden City looked as 4 stories high.  When we were passing gates, the gate was red with gold decorations.  According to Michael, there is a myth where if someone touched the golden decoration of the gate, that person will be happy for the rest of life.  Therefore, every classmates took a picture of touching golden decorations of gates of the Forbidden City.  Hopefully, it would bring good lucks to our crew.

Up above is the picture of a guardian lion in front of the Forbidden City.  They are built in a pair of male and female to show the balance.  They were usually in front of the public offices and said to have built for security and safety concerns.

This is the main building of the Forbidden City with the stairs for emperor in the background.  The place is said to be where Emperor resided to do his work.  Also, the building in the back is said to be the biggest place in the Forbidden City.

Below is the picture of bedroom of emperor and dragon lady.  At the time, the political power of dragon lady was above that of kings.  Therefore, the bedroom of dragon lady was bigger and fancier than that of the emperor at that time.  However, it was really amazing to see how much the room is preserved, to the extent where every tools are in place.

After finishing with the Forbidden City, we went to a restaurant to eat authentic Beijing duck. The Beijing duck would be cooked in whole and would be cut in front of the customer.  I personally have never seen a food like these, so it was really interesting.  Along with Beijing duck, we ate salad, vegetable roll with sauce, desert that is similar to yogurt jelly, and others.

After the meal, we departed with Michael and headed to a Budda temple.  The temple was different from others in a sense that it was a Tibetan buddah temple.  Therefore, the way they dress, structures are set, or shapes of the Budda statues are very different.  Also, it was where biggest Budda statue (according to Guiness Book) was placed.  The statue was three stories tall and had a magnificent view.

It was the first day where we took subway to travel.  Personally, I am very interested in subway system in all over the world, as it depicts the countries’ everyday life system.  Surprisingly, the subway system in China was well built and clean.

As of last event for the day, we went to night street to take a tour and to eat dinner. The night street in China was really lively.  People were talking and there were music and performances on the street.  We went to a famous noodle restaurant and had a beef noodle soup.  The noodle soup was thicker than the one in America but it had rich taste behind it.
